Gravely ill, Empress Shangguan Zhao sought out her long-lost daughter Shangguan Yue, hoping to pass the throne to her. Once the wife of a poor scholar named Lin Mu'an, Shangguan Yue devoted herself to her parents-in-law and helped her husband pass the imperial exams. But after his success, Lin Mu'an, eager for wealth and power, conspired with Chen Aoshuang, the magistrate's daughter, to frame Shangguan Yue for infidelity and force a divorce. In the nick of time, Shangguan Yue's true identity was revealed, and the eunuch Chen Ze, who was secretly sworn to protect her, sacrificed his life to shield her. Finally, Shen Ling, sent by the Empress, arrived in time to expose the truth and punish the wicked. At the funeral of her foster father Chen Ze, Shangguan Yue declared her accession, severed ties with the faithless Lin Mu'an, and transformed from a discarded wife into an Empress ruling the realm. The story weaves together power struggles and the nature of good and evil, painting a palace legend of betrayal, revenge and rebirth.
