In a deadly fire, surgeon Gu Qinchuan chose to save his mistress Kong Yueyue, leaving his wife Zhao Shengsheng to perish. A vicious manipulation by the third party caused Gu Qinchuan not only to miss the chance to save his wife, but also to mistakenly believe the news of her death was merely a miscarriage. Only when Shengsheng lay deep beneath the earth did he realize the wife he had once shunned was the kidney donor who had saved his life, and that the arsonist who killed her was the very person he had shielded. As the truth came to light, Gu Qinchuan was consumed by belated regret, and the story ends in a tragedy of grief.
